Both are free to start. Both say they help you learn instead of just handing you answers. They are still different tools for different moments.

ChatGPT Study Mode is a tutor in a conversation. It is at its best when you are stuck on one problem and want to be walked through it. Lernix AI is a study pack builder. It is at its best when you have a lecture PDF or a recording and want notes, flashcards, a quiz, and a mind map you can come back to all week.

This comparison was checked on October 9, 2026. Both products change often, so verify details on their own pages before you rely on them.

What ChatGPT Study Mode is

OpenAI launched Study Mode in late July 2025 for Free, Plus, Pro, and Team accounts. You switch it on inside a regular ChatGPT conversation.

Instead of answering directly, it asks guiding questions, breaks a problem into steps, and checks whether you understood a step before moving on. You can ask it to teach one concept at a time, give hints when you are stuck, and quiz you with questions you answer inside the chat. You can also upload lecture notes or a photo of a problem and work from that.

Three details matter for students:

  • It is not a separate model. It is a different way of prompting the same ChatGPT your plan already gives you, with the same usage limits.
  • It only works in a standard chat, not inside GPTs or Projects.
  • OpenAI says it can still make mistakes. Treat its explanations the way you would a confident classmate.

What Lernix AI is

Lernix AI is an AI study app for iPhone, iPad, Android, and the web. You add a source: a PDF of up to 500 pages, a YouTube link, a photo of a page, pasted text, or a lecture recording. Typical PDF and YouTube analysis finishes in 8 to 10 seconds.

You get a pack for that source: Smart Notes with chapters and key takeaways, a one-page Visual Note, flashcards you sort into Got it and Review, multiple-choice and true-or-false quizzes with instant feedback, and a mind map you can zoom and save. You can edit the notes, translate them, and pick the study language before you generate in any of 34 languages.

There is also a chat, called Ask AI. It answers from the material you uploaded, so questions stay tied to what your course actually covered.

New accounts get 2 free starter materials. Premium unlocks unlimited materials, and the web price is lower than the app stores. See pricing.

Where Study Mode is the better pick

You are stuck on one problem. A derivation, a proof, a tricky mechanism. Study Mode will hold your hand through it step by step and will not let you skip to the end.

The topic is not in your materials. If you need background your professor never covered, a general tutor with broad knowledge is the right tool.

You want to think out loud. Socratic back-and-forth is good for untangling a misconception. A flashcard is not.

You already pay for ChatGPT. Study Mode costs nothing extra.

Where Lernix is the better pick

You have a pile of course material. Lernix exists to turn a 60-page slide deck or a 50-minute lecture into something reviewable in seconds. A chat tutor needs you to bring the questions.

You need to remember, not just understand. Research consistently rates practice testing and spaced practice as the most effective study techniques. Lernix’s default output is practice: flashcards, quizzes, and a mind map you can redraw from memory. See active recall and spaced repetition with AI flashcards.

You want answers tied to the lecture. Ask AI tutors from the material you uploaded. That is a limitation for general questions and an advantage for “what did the professor mean by this slide.”

You study in more than one language. Generate the pack in your language from a lecture in another, or translate the notes after.

You study on your phone between classes. A pack that lives in a folder with your results beats scrolling back through a chat transcript.

How to use both in one week

  1. Sunday: upload the week’s slides and recordings to Lernix. Read the Smart Notes once.
  2. Monday to Wednesday: flashcards and quizzes in Lernix. Mark what you miss.
  3. When a miss does not make sense: ask Lernix’s Ask AI first, because it answers from the slides. If you need more background than the slides contain, open ChatGPT Study Mode and work the concept step by step.
  4. Thursday: redraw the Lernix mind map from memory. Use Study Mode to fill the branch you forgot.
  5. Before the exam: Visual Note and the Review pile. No new chats.

The pattern is simple. Build and drill in Lernix. Tutor in Study Mode when you need to go deeper than your materials.

Two cautions for both tools

Both can be wrong. OpenAI says so about Study Mode. Lernix generates notes from your material, and you should still check names, numbers, and formulas against the original before they go in an exam answer.

Both are study aids, not submission tools. Making notes, flashcards, and practice questions from your own lecture material is studying. Having either tool do graded work is not. If your syllabus does not say, ask. Our guide: Is using AI to study cheating?

Frequently Asked Questions

Is ChatGPT Study Mode free?

It launched for Free, Plus, Pro, and Team accounts. It uses the model and usage limits of whatever plan you have.

Can ChatGPT make flashcards?

It can write question-and-answer pairs in the chat. It does not keep a flashcard deck attached to your lecture that you can swipe through, sort into Got it and Review, and reopen next week. That is the job Lernix is built for.

Does Lernix have a tutor chat?

Yes. Ask AI answers questions using the material you uploaded. It is grounded in your sources rather than the open internet, which is the point. Free accounts get a limited number of questions per starter material. Premium removes the limit.

Which should I use the night before an exam?

Lernix. Run the Review pile and glance at the Visual Note. A tutoring conversation the night before tends to turn into new material, and new material the night before rarely helps.

How does Lernix compare to NotebookLM?

Different again. NotebookLM is a research notebook with citations. We wrote a separate comparison: NotebookLM vs Lernix AI.

Build the pack first

Open app.lernixai.com, or get Lernix AI on the App Store and Google Play. Upload one lecture and see the notes, flashcards, quiz, and mind map in about 10 seconds. Keep Study Mode open for the questions the slides cannot answer.
