Some questions are hard to type. “What does this figure on page 212 mean?” “Why did my teacher circle this step?” “Can you just show me what a cell membrane looks like?” The answer you need is on a page, a whiteboard, or in a picture that does not exist yet.
Ask AI, the chat inside every Lernix AI material, now handles both. You can send photos with your question, and Premium learners can ask the tutor to draw a labeled diagram and get the image in the reply.
Both are live on iPhone, iPad, Android, and the web.
What is new
- Photos in chat. Attach up to 4 photos to a message, from your camera or your photo library. Send a photo with no text if the picture is the question.
- Drawn study images. Ask for a diagram, illustration, or labeled picture in plain words. The tutor draws one image per reply and shows it in the chat.
- Everything stays in the conversation. Photos and drawings are saved with the chat, so you can scroll back, tap to enlarge, and keep asking about them.
Ask with a photo
Open any material, go to Ask AI, and tap the photo button next to the message box. On iPhone, iPad, and Android you can take a new photo or choose several from your library at once. On the web you pick files from your device, and phone browsers usually offer the camera too.
Then ask. The tutor reads the photo together with the notes of the material you have open, and answers from both.
Good things to photograph:
| You have | Send | Ask |
|---|---|---|
| A figure the slides only mention | A photo of the textbook page | ”What is this diagram showing, and how does it connect to my notes?” |
| A problem you are stuck on | A photo of the problem | ”Walk me through the first two steps. Do not give the final answer.” |
| Handwritten class notes | A photo of the page | ”Which ideas from my material are missing here?” |
| A whiteboard after the lecture | A photo of the board | ”Explain this in simpler words and tell me what to remember.” |
A few details that save time:
- Photos are shrunk for you. Large photos are resized before upload, so a 12-megapixel picture does not slow the chat down.
- Up to 4 per message. For a long problem, photograph it in parts and send them together.
- Clear beats many. Good light, a flat page, and the text filling the frame read better than four blurry shots.
- One material at a time. Ask AI is a tutor for the material that is open. If a photo is about a different subject, it points you to the material that covers it instead of guessing.
Ask it to draw
If you are on Premium, you can ask the tutor for a picture at any point in the conversation:
- “Draw a labeled diagram of how a bill becomes a law.”
- “Illustrate mitosis and meiosis side by side.”
- “Sketch the water cycle with arrows and labels.”
While the tutor draws, a placeholder shows in the reply. When the image is ready it appears above a short explanation of what it shows. The tutor writes labels in the language you chat in, so a Spanish question gets Spanish labels.
In the iPhone, iPad, and Android apps, open a drawn image and tap Save to put it in your photo library.
Drawing is meant as a quick explanation, not a printout. There is one image per reply, and a fair-use limit keeps requests reasonable. If you reach it, the tutor tells you to try again later and answers in text meanwhile.
Drawing in chat vs. Visual Notes and mind maps
Lernix already makes two pictures from your material automatically:
- A Visual Note is a 16:9 infographic of the 3 to 6 core points in the whole material. It is built only from what the material says.
- A mind map shows how the ideas in the material connect.
A chat drawing is different. You ask for it on demand, about the one thing you are stuck on, and the tutor illustrates it. Use the Visual Note for the big picture and the chat drawing for a single concept.
Check what it shows
Photos and drawings make the chat more useful. They do not make it infallible.
- Read the photo back. If the tutor misreads a handwritten number or a smudged label, correct it in your next message.
- Check drawn labels. AI-drawn diagrams can contain a wrong or misspelled label. Compare them with your notes or textbook before you copy anything into an assignment.
- Ask for explanations, not answers. Using the chat to understand a problem is studying. Handing in its output as your own work is not. See Is using AI to study cheating? for a practical line.
Where it works and what it costs
| Free account | Premium | |
|---|---|---|
| Send photos in Ask AI | Yes, within the free chat allowance | Yes |
| AI-drawn study images | No | Yes |
| iPhone, iPad, Android, web | Yes | Yes |
Free accounts get a limited number of Ask AI questions on their starter materials. Premium removes that limit and unlocks drawing. Subscribing on the web costs less than in the app stores. See pricing.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I send a photo of a homework problem?
Yes. Ask AI will read the photo and explain the problem using your material. Ask it to guide you step by step, then compare with your own work. If your course restricts AI use, follow its policy.
How many photos can I attach, and which formats work?
Up to 4 photos per message. Common formats such as JPG, PNG, and WebP work, and iPhone photos are converted automatically. Large photos are resized before they are uploaded.
Do I need Premium to send photos?
No. If you can send a message in Ask AI, you can attach photos to it. Drawing images in chat is a Premium feature.
Are the drawn diagrams accurate?
Often, but not always. AI drawings can get a label or a detail wrong, so treat them as a quick aid and check them against your notes. For a diagram that only contains what your material says, use the Visual Note.
Where do my photos go, and can I delete them?
Photos and drawings are stored with the chat so they show up again when you reopen it. Clearing a material’s chat history deletes its photos and drawings, and deleting your account removes all of them.
Which languages does it work in?
Ask in your own language. The tutor answers in the language you use, and drawn labels follow it. Lernix AI supports 34 study languages. See choose your study language before you generate.
